The silmar
lawsuit settlement is a great example of keeping an eye on the
people in corporations who must take responsibility for harming
their neighbor’s health and environment.
The $4.75 million settlement can be claimed by the
estimated 1,000 residents in Latonia who lived near the chemical
plant. However, there
is a deadline to file the claim.
Another
positive result from the claim is that the plant will take steps
to reduce harmful emissions from the plant.
“Under
the agreement, additional protective devices and backup devices
will be installed, and the company will apply within 120 days for
a permit from the state of Kentucky that will allow only 10 percent
of the emissions the plant can now put out legally.” - http://www.kypost.com/2004/08/11/plast081104.html
