The FDA removed the drug,
fenfluramine, the other part of the Fen Phen drug, from the
market in 1997.
This act was due to the fact
that this drug was linked to heart valve defects and primary
pulmonary hypertension (PPH). Because of this, thousands
of lawsuits have been filed against American Home Products, the
makers of Fen Phen.
In the summer of 2000, American
Home Products settled their lawsuits by agreeing to pay $12
billion. Those affected by Fen Phen will be paid anywhere
between $5,000 and $1.5 million each. The cost depends on
the seriousness of the injury.
