Purdue Pharma includes lawsuit settlements and encouraging news
that the wrongful doing of persons inside pharmaceutical
companies can be "punished" after proven guilty in a
court of law. It's great to see Attorney Generals hold up
the law. Note the much-publicized fired Attorney Generals
and their resolve to uphold the law. This type of culture
is good for the United States and its well-being.
Unlike the
culture that has been described about Purdue Pharma--a culture
that focused on misleading customers to the point of making the
drug, Oxycontin, addictive, for profit.
Which leads
to this ironic statement on the Purdue Pharma's web page (which
may be revised soon): "Purdue's
unique culture and environment provide our employees with many
opportunities to expand their technical and managerial skills,
work creatively and innovatively on both an individual and team
level, and make a difference in the development of company
projects and objectives." - http://www.pharma.com/html/Careers_at_Purdue/Careers_at_Purdue.htm
May 8, 2007:
"Attorney General Greg Stumbo
today announced a settlement with pharmaceutical maker Purdue
Pharma regarding the narcotic pain medication OxyContin. The
settlement resolves concerns that Purdue Pharma engaged in
extensive off-label marketing of OxyContin, a time-released,
Schedule II opioid used for pain management of moderate to
severe pain over an extended period of time, and that Purdue
Pharma failed to adequately disclose abuse and diversion risks
associated with the drug in violation of Kentucky’s consumer
protection statutes."
"'Kentucky has suffered
greatly from abuse of Oxycontin', said Attorney General Stumbo.
“Today we have a new tool to clamp down on illegitimate use of
this drug. The court order outlaws dangerous practices at their
source by controlling overprescribing and curbing aggressive
sales by the manufacturer." - http://www.kentucky.gov/Newsroom/ag/purduepharmasettlement.htm
