Vioxx lawsuit Canada

Vioxx lawsuit Canada

Vioxx has been big news in the United States.  The respected CBS show, 60 Minutes, did a segment on this recalled drug.  Even on billboards there are big advertisements about this drug and who you can call for legal help.

This big medical recall on a popular medicine is just starting in Canada.

Because this drug is used for treating repeated and regular ailments such as menstrual cycles, osteoarthritis, and acute pain, its regular use is more widespread than most drugs that apply to a more targeted, smaller part of the population.

Side effects range from respiratory tract infection, diarrhea, high blood pressure to heart attack, kidney damage, and in certain cases, ulcers.

Vioxx® Settlement

On October 1, 2004, an entry here (Merck Withdraws Vioxx®) announced the decision by the company for a voluntary withdrawal of their arthritis and pain medication Vioxx® (rofecoxib) because study results showed that patients who used the drug for 18 months had an increased risk of cardovascular (CV) events, such as heart attack and stroke. In the first personal-injury case over the drug to come to trial, on August 19, 2005 a jury ruled that Merck & Co. must pay more than $253 million to the family of a Texas man who died after taking the company's Vioxx painkiller.
