Common Side Effects of zyprexa

Common Side Effects of Zyprexa that have caused the Food and Drug Administration to require drug maker, Eli Lilly, to put a black box warning on this drug’s label, include the following:

  • Hyperglycemia (elevated blood sugar).  Sometimes seen as the preliminary stages of diabetes when a patient experiences increased urine, thirst, hunger, dry-scratchy skin and extreme tiredness.
  • Diabetes Melltitus (exacerbation of diabetes).  Body cannot regulate sugar “normally” and thus may result in harmful effects to nerves and blood vessels.
  • Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA).  Lack of necessary insulin to regulate sugar in the blood, which can progress into a coma.  Symptoms of this condition include high blood glucose, need to eat excessively, extreme thirst, and repeated urination.

Zyprexa is also called Olanzapine.  It has been prescribed to supposedly stop brain receptors that induce psychotic disorders such as during the manic-depression stage of bipolar disorder, when a patient is experiencing dementia, anxiety and increased irritation.
