The
U.S. Food and Drug Administration has ordered a warning on the
label of Zyprexa (also called by its generic name, Olanzapine)
because this drug has been linked to the following side effects:
- Hyperglycemia
(elevated blood sugar).
Sometimes seen as the preliminary stages of diabetes
when a patient experiences increased urine, thirst, hunger,
dry-scratchy skin and extreme tiredness.
- Diabetes
Melltitus (exacerbation of diabetes).
Body cannot regulate sugar “normally” and thus
may result in harmful effects to nerves and blood vessels.
- Diabetic
Ketoacidosis (DKA). Lack
of necessary insulin to regulate sugar in the blood, which
can progress into a coma.
Symptoms of this condition include high blood
glucose, need to eat excessively, extreme thirst, and
repeated urination.
Zyprexa
has originally been prescribed to treat schizophrenia and then
later prescribed to treat bipolar disorder.
