bextra vioxx.  Bextra and Vioxx are members of a new group of pharmaceuticals called COX-2 inhibitors.  Both are used for arthritris pain.

Side of effects of Bextra or Valdecoxib include the following:

  • Potential for increased risk of cardiovascular events

  • Gastrointestinal bleeding

  • Serious skin reactions, some resulting in death.

If you are currently on Bextra check with your doctor, especially if you have a history of heart problems.

 

On April 7, 2005 the FDA announced that it had asked Pfizer, Inc. to withdraw Bextra from the market "because the overall risk versus benefit profile for the drug is unfavorable."

Vioxx

It is used to treat adults who experience acute pain, patients who have symptoms of osteoarthritis, and women who have painful menstrual cycles.

Side effects of this drug can include upper respiratory tract infection, diarrhea, nausea, heartburn, swelling of the lower legs or feet, high blood pressure.

Further research has found that Vioxx has been connected to five instances of a nonbacterial type of meningitis.

Other side effects include increased chances for heart attack, kidney damage, and in rare cases, serious ulcers.
