| Merck
is the maker of the drug, ceoxx, the name for Vioxx in other
countries.
A three-year study showed that
patients who took Vioxx for longer than 18 months suffered from
deadly side effects such as stroke and heart attack when
compared to patients who took placebo. These patients who
had increased chances of heart problems previously did not have
any medical history of cardiovascular disease.
As a result of this study,
Merck voluntarily withdrew Vioxx/Ceoxx on September 30, 2004.
Both Vioxx and Ceoxx are a
drug named Rofecoxib, used to relieve pain, arthritis and
menstrual cramps.
